Third through Fifth Graders celebrate their progress as readers and receive their new AR certificates. We will also plan our third quarter so that all students can reach their goals.

Sixth Grade Students re-read Hansel and Gretel as they compare the opera with the story.

Check-in and Check-out week at the library. Regular library times will only be observed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Because students have had their books for so long, I would like to have all homeroom classes come in for checkout on these three days. Teachers, if your class has library scheduled on Days 5, 6, or 1, please contact Ms. Armbruster to find a time to bring in your students for checkout on Tuesday or Wednesday. We will not be holding regular instructional periods this week in order to get all students into the library.

AR STORE SCHEDULE:

The library will be hosting the following events in November:

First Graders will read As the Roadrunner Runs and learn about making maps.

Second Graders will read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and will be able to talk about the setting, the characters and the plot (beginning, middle, and end) of the story.

Third Grade Students will learn how to log on to the Library Catalog, search for a book and place a hold for a book.

Fourth Graders will use the library catalog to find books in the non-fiction section of the library.

Fifth Grade Students will use the library catalog to find books in the fiction sections of the library.

Sixth grade students will do a think-pair-share and talk about what makes a good story.

• Accelerated Reader Store, October 23-24. Third through Sixth Graders will be able to come in and spend the points they have earned with their Reading Practice. Students have the choice to spend or save their points. We will have books, school supplies, sports equipment, games, puzzles and many more items for students to “buy.”  Regular Library Classes are cancelled on these days, but we will remain open for AR check out.
• RIF (Reading is FUNdamental), November 17 – 24. K-6th grade students will come to the library during their regular library times and instead of checking out a library book, they will get to choose a book to keep! RIF is sponsored by Federal Grants and by our own PTA. We are fortunate to have Mrs. Schrock as our RIF coordinator this year. The library will remain open for AR checkout during RIF.
• REPTILE MAN (November 26): Kindergarten students will be in the library learning all about different kinds of Reptiles. The library will be closed between 8:30 and 11:00 to host this event. AR books may be checked out between 11:00 and the end of the day.

• September 30: Preschool Story Day @ Washington Library. We welcome our youngest students to the library to celebrate our love of our Teddy Bears!
• September 30: Kindergarten Reading Program for Parents — 5:30 PM. A chance for parents to meet with the Kindergarten Teachers and learn how they can support their child’s growth in Reading.
• October 2: Read For the Record. Our students from Preschool to 6th grade participate in the Nation’s largest Read Aloud event to bring awareness to Preschool Literacy and its importance in a child’s development.

Kindergarten Students read about Families and talk about their favorite things to do with thier families.

First Graders and Second Graders talk about their favorite characters and decorate their shelf markers.

Third Grade Students think about how computers are used at home, in the classroom and in the library.

Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade Students learn how to Search the Destiny Catalog, log in to their account and place holds on books.

First Graders learn how to pick books from the shelf with the help of our very own shelf elf. They have learned the “Shelf Elf Song” and are eager to read their new library books.

Second Grade students are listening to the book Chester’s Way by Kevin Henkes. Next week they will get the chance to help the class complete a Character Comparison Chart on the Smart Board.

Third through Sixth Graders are receiving their training to be Washington Library Student Helpers. At Washington Library, our students check in and put away many of their own books. They do a wonderful job of learning to care for our library.
